Description

EchoChain bridges real-world data with blockchain applications by bringing external data on-chain, starting with a Marlowe prototype on testnet that processes pricing data requests and integrates with smart contracts. Development work will include deploying this solution on mainnet and researching the requirements to support additional smart contract languages. Together, these components aim to create a sustainable and innovative infrastructure for the Cardano ecosystem. In addition, we aim to create a multi-oracle solution that will provide easier for developers to use a wide variety of different oracle solutions. In addition to Cardano, we hope to extend this to other chains to allow cross chain information exchange. https://docs.google.com/document/d/15rzJnLApIBNoAD2mSS_smtD36XWMk2Rtad4AWQCafcE/edit?tab=t.0

Problem Statement

EchoChain introduces an oracle protocol offering developers building with Marlowe a tailored solution for integrating real-world data. By focusing first on Marlowe’s requirements, EchoChain ensures seamless compatibility with its discrete-state logic, enabling contracts that incorporate external data without compromising security or scalability. This approach not only expands Marlowe’s use cases but also establishes a foundation for broader UTXO-chain adoption.

Proposal Benefit

EchoChain provides developers building on Marlowe with a purpose-built oracle solution that integrates real-world data. Developers gain access to market data (e.g., ADA/USD prices) significantly reducing the time of building data-dependent applications. The protocol ensures compatibility with Marlowe's state model, enabling more complex smart contracts. End users benefit from EchoChain through more sophisticated and reliable applications that react autonomously to real-world conditions. This project incorporates MIT-licensed open-source components designed to enable transparent work that can be reused by the community.

Key Proposal Deliverables

  • An on-chain data integration solution deployed on Cardano mainnet, starting with Marlowe smart contracts.
  • Research integration of alternative smart contract languages to broaden compatibility and adoption across the Cardano ecosystem.
  • Multi-oracle P2P protocol prototype https://docs.google.com/document/d/15rzJnLApIBNoAD2mSS_smtD36XWMk2Rtad4AWQCafcE/edit?tab=t.0

Cost Breakdown

Limited Marlowe Oracle Mainet deployment - $158,000 USD Alternative Language research - $21,000 USD Multi-Oracle prototype - $30,000.00 USD

Total estimation $209k USD

Resourcing & Duration

1 Full-Time Developer: Dedicated to the development, implementation, and deployment of EchoChain for the duration of the project. 1 External Developer: Specializing in smart contract development and security to ensure robust and secure on-chain integrations. 1 Part-Time Engineer: Post-deployment, half the capacity of an engineer will be allocated for ongoing maintenance and support.

Experience

Our team at Wolfram Blockchain Labs has already established a majority of the necessary infrastructure, including a fully functioning real-time price feed system and prototype integration with Marlowe smart contracts. We are supported by the Marlowe 2025 team.

Maintenance & Support

WBL is committed to delivering a sustainable, oracle solution for Cardano, providing ongoing protocol maintenance for at least two years post-launch monitoring, regular security upgrades for Marlowe compatibility, and developer support to ensure reliable, secure data infrastructure as the ecosystem evolves.

Supplementary Endorsement

EchoChain builds on our completed Marlowe Smart Contract Execution project from Catalyst Fund 11, which is now in the final closeout phase. The proposal has received support from the Marlowe 2025 development team, who recognize its alignment with their roadmap for scalable financial contracts. This endorsement reflects both our proven track record in delivering Cardano infrastructure for a dedicated oracle solution tailored to Marlowe’s requirements.

Key Dependencies

  • Marlowe Tooling for Mainnet Deployment: The availability of Marlowe tooling for mainnet deployment is critical for integrating real-world data into Cardano smart contracts. This includes ensuring compatibility, stability, and scalability of the Marlowe infrastructure.
  • Documentation and Technical Support from Other UTXO Chains: This is essential for researching and developing a generalized UTXO oracle protocol. This includes understanding their architecture, interoperability mechanisms, and data integration capabilities.

The proposal was not sufficiently convincing for me - in terms of the need for its inclusion in the 2025 annual budget. Just my impression after reading it. We won't be able to fund all submitted projects and this one did not stand out as a necessity to me at this point in time. Maybe Catalyst could provide an alternative avenue if Catalyst is approved. I appreciate Wolfram Blockchain Lab's contributions to the Cardano space.

  1. What measurable KPIs will define the successful delivery of the Marlowe oracle integration on mainnet?

  2. What exactly is the scope of the research into alternative smart contract languages, and what tangible deliverables (e.g., reports, proofs-of-concept) are expected?

  3. What are the success metrics and definition of completion for the multi-oracle protocol prototype?

  4. Are there any target metrics for EchoChain adoption in terms of the number of Marlowe smart contracts or transaction volume?

  5. How has this proposal been socialized across the Cardano community via X (formerly Twitter), GitHub, or other developer channels?

  6. While support from the Marlowe 2025 team is noted, is there any evidence of broader endorsement or feedback from the Cardano developer and user community?

  7. Are there records of engagement in Discords, forums, or social media showing support or community discussion?

  8. After the promised two years of protocol maintenance, how will ongoing operational and upgrade costs be sustained?
